RAC Book: Yes

Emily throws a party when her parents are out of town and is not expected to be caught by her Aunt Jolie. Jolie is not there to keep an eye on Emily, however. Instead, she is there to inform Emily that her parents’ plane has crashed and her parents have in fact died. As Emily tries to cope with the loss of her parents, it is only made worse by the discovery of an airplane tray in the wreckage with the words “Emily Please Forgive Me” written on it in her mother’s favorite shade of lipstick. As Emily struggles to understand what her mother is apologizing for, she is moved to NYC to live with her aunt where she has to begin a new school and try to make new friends. As Emily tries to navigate dating, high school, and friendships, she can’t help but keep trying to figure out what her mother’s apology meant and if she will ever find out the truth.

This book starts out very dramatic and really draws readers in. It then moves into a typical teenage book with a new school, bullying, boyfriends who cheat, etc. Emily’s life is interesting because her aunt is a famous make-up artist, which seems to give her an edge as she enters this posh lifestyle she is not used to. As interesting as Emily’s new life is, the real draw for this book is the mysterious apology her mother left for her. Readers will not be disappointed when the reason behind this apology is revealed. Overall, this is a fun teenage book with romance and mystery.

RAC Book: Yes

2010 Iowa Teen Award Winner

Scat begins with Nick and Marta in their biology class cringing that they will be called on by Mrs. Starch, who is the meanest teacher in the school. Instead, she calls on Duane and assigns him a major paper when he admits he failed to do the assignment. Duane (who’s nickname is Smoke because he has started a few fires in the past) storms out of class and everyone wonders if there will be any repercussions for Mrs. Starch singling him out in class. The following day, the class takes a field trip to a nearby swampy area. Around lunchtime they are evacuated due to a small wildfire, but Mrs. Starch sends the bus ahead so that she can return to find an inhaler that a student dropped. She never returned to school and no one can find her. Nick and Marta decide to investigate further in order to see if something terrible happened to her when she returned into the swamp. Meanwhile, Nick’s father returns from Iraq injured and the entire family must come to terms with the fact that nothing will ever be the same again.

Carl Hiaasen has once again created a story in which the characters are interesting and colorful and an environmental issue is discussed. In this book, Hiaasen addresses some of the endangered animals in the Florida area and the lengths the government and other protection agencies are going to in order to protect these creatures. The pacing of the story seems natural and the story is revealed in a timely and appropriate manner. Nick’s father serving in Iraq is something many students can relate to and while there is always hope for his prognosis, he does not return from war unscathed. Any fan of Hiaasen’s previous books will enjoy this one.

Carli is an actress who has just landed a role as a tough boarding school girl, which is a problem because she considers herself a “nerd.” Her agent sends her to The Winchester School, which is the boarding school where all the students who were rejected from other boarding schools go. They are called the “dirty laundry.” Her agent’s son, FUN, is supposed to be Carli’s assistant and help her keep her undercover identity of Sheila Smith. On the first day of school a girl named Darcy goes missing and no one seems that worried about it. Carli and FUN decide to do some investigating on their own and start to worry about some of the people around them. Could some of their friends be possible kidnappers or even murderers? Or is someone setting others up to take the fall for their crimes?

This is a very lighthearted mystery in which there is a sinister plot going on, but it is very subtle and not always the focus of the story. The perspective changes from Carli to FUN throughout the story. Both of them focus a lot on themselves and their own situations and observations of what is going on around them. Some students will feel it drags in the middle, but if they make it, will enjoy the ending. A fast and enjoyable, but fortgettable read.

Storm Front is not a new release, but has recently come to my attention. Fantasy fans should be aware of this series that follows a wizard names Harry Dresden. He lives a difficult life in which he tries to make a living as a wizard while constantly being monitored by the wizarding counsel who are looking for any excuse to destroy him. In this first installment, Harry becomes involved in two cases at the same time. One is a housewife simply looking for her husband who has gone missing, but Harry soon finds that there may be some magic involved in this disappearance. There have also been some gruesome murders involving magic and everyone automatically assumes that he is to blame since he is the only self proclaimed wizard around. As he tries to clear his name he becomes aware that he is now the killer’s next target. How can he compete with someone he has yet to identify?

This story is a lot of fun and includes a basic private investigator theme with magic and fantasy creatures. There are some sophisticated topics and adult language, which readers should be aware of, but most fantasy readers will enjoy it nonetheless for its intricate plot and carefully integrated details. It is easy to see why this has been a popular series and I’m glad I was introduced to it.

Ellie Hatcher is a detective in the NYPD who has been a media favorite in the past due to her police officer father’s untimely death when she was a child. Now she has been unexpectedly called up to help in a murder investigation that the lead detective believes might be involved with an online dating company called First Date. Two female members of First Date have been murdered and they believe that maybe someone is stalking women he meets on this service. The CEO of First Date refuses to cooperate with any valid names and IDs unless they have more information than just a hunch, which leaves them without a way of finding any information on any of the men these women were in contact with.

This exciting mystery has many twists and turns in it and keeps readers guessing all the way up until the end. The mystery itself gets more complicated before anything starts to get resolved, which might frustrate some readers, but the last third of the book is very exciting and action packed as the details start to fall into place. All of the elements needed for a good mystery are present and the clues for the end result are present throughout the story. Fans of murder mystery stories will enjoy this book.

Scarlett Wakefield goes to an exclusive private school called St. Tabby’s where she has two best friends and aspires to be an Olympic gymnast. She is shocked when one day the elite group of girls in the school asks her to join them for a party. She immediately drops her best friends in favor of this new group which causes a permanent rift. When she is at the party she ends up kissing one of the most popular boys in school and he unexpectedly dies of an allergy attack. No one is able to understand why he had this reaction and why he did not have his epinephrine pen on him. She soon becomes blamed even though there is no proof that she did anything wrong. Her life becomes so miserable that she is forced to move away and go to the private school her grandmother is headmistress of. As she relives that horrible day when Dan died she cannot seem to stop punishing herself. One day she receives a mysterious note in which she realizes that there is much more to this incident than she knows and she is determined to find out what it is.

This story is interesting and captures the reader’s attention from the beginning. Anyone can identify with the feelings Scarlett has throughout the book. The mystery element also becomes intriguing as most readers will not know right off what actually caused Dan’s death. The only issue with the story is that the ending is unsatisfying and feels unfinished. Whether a sequel is planned or not does not excuse the fact tht the ending feels too abrupt.

Lena Dawson is a fingerprint analyst who is known for being very thorough and a bit of a loner. She is famous for cracking some difficult cases in the past and is therefore not surprised when a distraught mother approaches her about the unusual circumstances surrounding her infant son’s death. His case is one of several in the past few months that was ruled a SIDS death. Lena begins to get suspicious, but isn’t sure if she wants to delve into this complicated and difficult case. Many of her co-workers believe the only reason it is coming to light now is because the last victim’s family has connections to some major political officials. At the same time, Lena is dealing with a difficult marriage separation and the realization that she has been pushing people away for some time. This case stirs some uneasy feelings about her own past before she came to be adopted, but she feels she must solve the case in order to move past her own issues.

Mystery lovers will enjoy the story about the infant deaths because it continues to evolve and develop right up until the end. Lena’s own hidden past seems a little too contrived and unbelievable. Once she discovers the truth it seems unlikely that it would have been kept from her in the first place due to the fact that not knowing led her imagination to create unimaginable memories that she came to accept as real. The character of Lena and her co-workers seem flat and uninteresting at times. If the characters had been more interesting the story may have moved along more quickly. Mystery readers will enjoy, but will find it slow.

Brady loves living so close to the Chesapeake Bay. His father is a crab and oyster fisherman and he has two best friends, Digger and J.T. One day Brady sees the neighbor’s red kayak out before the boys go to school. He debates whether to yell and tell them it’s too dangerous to be out, but his friends convince him they will be fine. Brady is pulled out of school by his father later that morning because the kayak never returned and it contained the neighbor and her son. Brady had babysat for Ben and wanted to help find him.

As the search and rescue teams start heading off down the river Brady learns that the woman was found but was in shock. By chance he finds Ben and tries to resuscitate him while driving the boat back to the ambulance. By the time he gets there they have a pulse and Brady is hailed as a hero for the rest of the day. Things begin to go terribly wrong, however, when he starts to suspect that the kayak sinking was no accident and wonders how he should proceed.

This book was captivating in the way the story was revealed and in how it was explained. Brady faces one difficult decision after another and must decide who he should protect and who he should hurt. His father helps him decide that finding the right decision is easy, it’s just hard to act on it. This book will be a hit with teen boys due to its short and to the point nature, as well as for its interesting content. It would be good for classroom discussions on responsibility and making choices that will affect the rest of your life and many other people’s lives as well.

The story begins when Alice who has just left her two week old baby for the first time ventures out for two hours and comes home to find she does not know the baby in the crib. She believes that someone has come into her mother-in-law’s house, where her and her husband live, and snatched her baby only to replace it with another newborn. Her husband becomes angry with her as she refuses to accept that this is her baby and insists on calling the police. The police have a difficult time deciding how to proceed since no babies have been reported missing and there is a baby present at the house.

The story alternates between Alice and one of the police detectives. He is generally accepted to be a really good detective and feels that this case is not as innocent as it first appears. He does not know if he believes Alice about someone switching the babies, but believes something is amiss. His colleagues all believe Alice is crazy and suffering from depression and psychosis from her difficult delivery.

The mystery was intriguing all the way up until everything is explained. The resolution is not as good as one would hope after such an intriguing mystery has been set up. There are moments where Alice’s husband shows tortuous feelings toward her for casting doubt on their family. It is never fully explained why she allows him to do this to her. The ending is satisfying, but unbelievable. The details provided weave together to form a good pace and some surprises as details are revealed, but again the motivations of the characters in their actions is not always fully explained. Readers who enjoy mystery and suspense will enjoy this, but anyone who has difficulty with people undergoing very degrading and difficult situations will find it troubling.

Dexter Morgan was adopted when he was three and even though he doesn’t remember anything before that, his adopted father, who is also a cop, seems determined to help him rise above his past. As Dexter grows up, however, he begins to feel tendencies toward murder. As hard as he tries to fight it he finds himself murdering animals in the neighborhood. Once his father discovers this he teaches him how to execute a murder so that he will never get caught, while also showing him how to profile serial killers. He believes that if you have to kill you might as well kill people who deserve it.

When Dexter grows up he becomes a blood spatter analyst in a police station while his sister strives to become a homicide detective. He works very hard to find people he believes deserve to die for their sins and making that a reality. Soon there is a new murderer in town who has caused quite a stir since the bodies never contain any blood. As Dexter tries to solve this case it keeps getting further into his psyche and he wonders if it is possible he is committing these murders and not even knowing it. Is it time for Dexter to pay for his crimes before he lost control completely?

This murderous villain forces the reader to ponder very important issues that are often glossed over in television and movies. Is it okay to kill if you are killing other “bad guys”? Is it okay to take vengeance into your own hands? Are there people who truly have a disposition for murder or are they formed into that through environment or mental disease? Dexter Morgan can be a very sympathetic character, but he can also be a monster which makes these stories very complex and interesting to discuss with students. The story itself is very interesting and leaves you guessing until the end. Mystery readers will be fans of this book.
