Doppelganger by David Stahler Jr.

Genre:  Fantasy

Age Level:  14 and up

# of Pages:  258

RAC Book:  Yes

The main character in this book is a doppelganger.  Doppelgangers try to survive in this world through a human body.  In order to get a human body they must kill a human and take on his or her form.  They are not able to hold forms forever, though, and must eventually find a new body.

When the main character, who has no name, is turned out by his mother as a teenager to fend for himself he finds he has difficulty killing humans.  He finds an old man and takes his body first.  Then, one day some teenage boys decide to pick on the old man and he ends up killing a teenage boy.  He decides to become the boy, Chris, in order to see what it’s like to be a normal teenage boy.  “Chris” soon learns that life is not as perfect as he had seen on television.  His family has numerous problems including domestic abuse, his girlfriend seems to hate him, and he is supposed to be a football star and he knows nothing about it.  “Chris” must learn what it means to be human and whether or not it is worth all the trouble.

This fantasy has many unusual elements related to the doppelgangers, but they are all explained clearly by the author.  There is also a lot of violence, but it is not too graphic or disturbing.  The scenes with Chris’s family are very serious, but interesting for students to read because they have many problems but there is still hope for them to be happy together.  Mystery and fantasy readers will enjoy this title.

is there gonna be a second book?

    • 4 manderse11 December 11, 2008 at 5:41 pm

At this time I can find no evidence that there will be a second book. Stahler has written sequels to other books of his, though, so it could be coming.

    (spoiler)

I liked the book but it had a weak ending, he goes though all of that crap, and you think he gets stronger, stands up to chris’s father, quit football, got the d-ba his job back, admited his love for amber and told her the truth, killed the “sheganger” but at the end you just find out how weak he really is, he couldn’t stay with the one he loves, can someone please explain why the endings “so good”

I LOVED this book!!! the only thing that was annoying is that Amber never saw his real self and never learned about the sheganger… A sequel could be totally awesome, jut sayin

  27. 31 Jessi October 4, 2012 at 3:36 am

I just finished it and I teared up but didn’t cry. It is a really good book. I think if theres a second one it should still have Amber in it 🙂 I mean he still has the cell phone. Does he call her? Does she call him? Did she figure out gps and track him down to be with him? I mean theres so much that could happen. And to previous comments… Its a good ending because it doesn’t show that hes weak it actually shows that he is strong. He wants her to have a good life and to live it to the fullest! Shes only 16… A SEQUAL WOULD BE AMAZING!! I plan on trying to get ahold of the aurthor tonight 🙂

  28. 32 mike October 26, 2012 at 2:28 am

I liked the book and it was really good. I think that there should be a squeal because there are so many other things that can happen. If the author reads the note and gives this reply a good look I think he will probably write a 2nd book.

  29. 33 Jessi November 1, 2012 at 12:07 am

I talked to the author and hes working on a series with a special guest he said… So keep a look out for his new books 🙂

I just finished reading it. I hate endings like this because yes I end up craving for a sequel (not so much a movie to butcher up the story line.)

I believe it displays the irony in nature vs nurture. The mother raised him to do what was instinctive for his species, although her knowledge of the species is limited as there are not many of them out there “to be killing one another”. That it does not have to be this way. Gabriel blew off his nurturing right of the bat. Proved how willing he is to kill off natural impulses that he does not care to understand.

I would love to know what happened to little Echo. Chris couldn’t let it go, Gabriel knew better.

Very good book, started and finished it today.

  31. 36 Anonymous May 3, 2013 at 3:09 am

I’m not a reader AT ALL. It took me over half a semester to get to page 80 some and today I continued reading all the way to the end from that page. I was in love with the book but the end was disappointing. There wasn’t much about what happened to Chris’ family or even worse, nothing about how Amber reacted or what she did. MAKE ANOTHER ♥
