The Storm by Rachel Hawkins

St Medard’s Bay, Alabama is home to unbelievable hurricanes on a semi-regular basis, which is a great concern to Geneva who runs the inn in town. Up until now, the inn has managed to withstand most of the damage that has ravaged this town more than once due to these horrific hurricanes, but with business dwindling and another storm on the horizon Geneva is wondering if she can keep her parents’ inn going for much longer. Then, a writer named August Fletcher announces he wants to come stay at the inn indefinitely to write a story about the town’s most notorious unsolved murder. During a hurricane in 1984 Lo Bailey was accused of murdering her wealthy boyfriend and was acquitted. However, the town still whispers about how Lo got away with murder, and Geneva is stunned when she learns that August is bringing Lo with him for his research because she claims she wants to clear her name. At first, Geneva is thrilled to have some semi-permanent guests, but as time goes on she thinks both Lo and August have ulterior motives for being here and she isn’t sure she’s ready for the secrets threatening to come out. Does Geneva know as much about her parents, their inn, or this town as she thought? Will the truth of what happened to Lo’s boyfriend ever come out? Can the town handle any more scandal?

This mystery builds to an unbelievable crescendo has years of secrets and scandal start spilling out. Geneva is living a lonely, at times frustrating life, as she tries to keep her parents inn going strong in uncertain economic times. She has people in the town who care about her, but she’s still recovering from the brutal betrayal of her once fiance who left her running this inn on her own after he excitedly convinced her to do it together when she was leaning toward selling it. Will she begin to trust these newcomers to her inn and should they be trusted? The ending is both exciting and highly satisfying as the many clues about this town suddenly come together in a way that makes perfect sense but yet seem extremely likely to have been buried this whole time. Recommended for fans of exciting mystery stories that include my flashbacks from the past.
