Perfect Cover by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Genre: Spy mystery

Toby Klein enjoys hacking and making fun of girls who try too hard, so she is shocked when she gets personally invited to try out for the elite cheer squad. Soon she learns that the cheer squad is actually a cover for a group of spies where each member has a specialty they bring to the group, such as disguises or technology. Shortly after joining, Toby learns that there is a new mission they must undertake in order to protect the USA. As Toby gets used to the very real challenges of being one of these cheerleader operatives, she cannot help but feel like certain teammates do not want her on the team at all. Can she trust those around her to have her back in difficult situations? Is there still something about this team she does not know? Can she ever find a way keep her own identity in a group that focuses so much on outward appearances?

This fun beginning of a two book series follow a group of girls who all seem to have everything at their fingertips, only to find out that there is a lot more going on underneath the surface. Toby’s character struggles with the new rules forced upon her, especially since she doesn’t have a lot of time to get used to her new reality, but most of the other girls seem willing to help her get used to this new way of life. While aspects of this squad seem a little far fetched, it’s such a fun premise that it is readily accepted. Recommended for fans looking for a light hearted mystery with fun characters.
