Royal Heirs Academy by Lindsey Duga

Genre: Realistic Fiction

King Leander of Ashland has decided to choose an heir from his three grandchildren and a commoner who has shown great potential. All four contenders are sent to Almus Terra Academy where they are expected to show initiative, leadership, and of course excel in their classes. Titus is the only one who knew he was a prince growing up because his parents told him even though they were not supposed to. He feels great pressure to perform well and earn the crown, but his growing health concerns cannot be ignored anymore. Alaric was left to fend for himself in Ireland and has no real interest in ruling, but he does like going to a school where he has opportunities he could have never dreamed of. Emmeline was also not raised by her parents, but was raised in the lap of luxury and feels she would be the best ruler and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Sadie was happy growing up in Ashland until tragedy struck and she lost her way for a bit before being offered this opportunity. Can they all find a way to be successful and happy at this academy or is the pressure to compete too much? How will they be accepted by all the other children of elite and successful people? Who will prevail in becoming the official heir apparent?

This is the first in a series and each chapter follows one of the four main characters, which makes it easy to really understand where each character is coming from. All of the candidates have their own secrets and insecurities, but they try not to let any of that show in case it would hurt their chances of being able to rule one day. Sadie is definitely the most intriguing character simply because she is not an official blood relation, but the people come to appreciate her nonetheless because she is one of them and has lived in the kingdom her entire life. The ending feels fast because a lot happens very quickly, but that will only make readers want to continue on with the next one. Recommended for fans of other royal stories like Royal Blood or American Royals.

How to Pack for the End of the World by Michelle Falkhoff

Amina has struggled since her Jewish mosque was attacked several months before. Her anxiety has grown to the point that she has nightmares and her parents have decided a change of scenery might be helpful. So, she is going to the prestigious Gardner Academy on scholarship. Amina is a little annoyed her family is sending her away, but she quickly meets a group of friends who all share anxieties of their own and they form their own club where they prepare for different survival skills and scenarios. Along the way, Amina realizes that there have been bad things that have happened to all of the members of the group, except one. Everyone thought they were pranks or unfortunate occurrences, but Amina is starting to wonder if there is a more sinister plan at hand and wonders if their survival group is a target. Could it be Jo, the only member who hasn’t been harassed? Could it be someone else who is trying to hurt their circle of friends and if so, then why? Can Amina find a way to keep them all together so that they can face their anxieties together without turning on each other?

There is a fair amount of discussion on different forms of survival skills and possible hardships that could happen at any time from natural disasters to global warming to terrorist attacks. The focus of the book, however, is definitely the relationships between the characters. They are all totally different and yet they are able to form a cohesive club and each of them has unique relationships between them as well. The struggles Amina faces with her new friends, her family, and even her roommate will resonate with any teenager because everyone can identify with the challenges of maintaining several different relationships at once. At the same time, if you don’t put in the work, then the relationships are much less valuable as well. Recommended for students looking for a thought provoking novel that will resonate with them long after they have finished.

Fans of the Gossip Girl series will love this series as well.  The book goes into detail on fashion, trendy hot spots, and of course teen drinking and partying.  Although the book’s plot develops and strengthens over the course of the story, there is still a lot of fluff to this book.  Teens looking for a light teen drama will enjoy it, but anyone looking for more substance should keep looking.
